I've always wanted to do this! I love audiobooks, but I've never known how to become a narrator
People tell me I have a great voice, but I didn't know how to get started or find voice over jobs
I've done a little acting (or singing) but never knew how to turn it into a business. I'd love to learn more!
I've always wanted to do this. I've even looked into coaching and classes, but couldn't afford the expensive classes and demos
I've been thinking about this, but got overwhelemed with how much there is to learn. I just wish someone would make it easier!
Think about ALL the places you hear voices...
- Web videos
- eLearning modules
- TV commercials
- Telephone systems
- Movie theater ads
- Video games
- Live events
- and many more places!
- Most voice artists are working from home. This is a real career where you can earn an income.
- All voices are needed, from perky young voices to mature and educational voices to character voices.
- The Course, "Work from Home doing Voice Overs" will give you everything you need to get your voice over business up and running. It's jam-packed with information.
- You may replace your current income or do this on the side for a little extra income. Full-time or part-time. It's your schedule and your flexibility.
A comprehensive video-based course designed to lead you step-by-step through the process of setting up your voice over business. It's efficient and actionable. Set up your recording space, get the right equipment, learn how to use your equipment, edit audio and run your business.
I've taken many online courses and found most of them to be confusing. In an effort to share all they know, course creators actually packed too much information into their courses. I've found them to be disorganized, stressful and I didn't finish them! So when I designed this course, I did everything completely different. Here's how:
STEP-BY-STEP: This course is different because of the step-by-step approach. You’ll easily follow each step of the course and complete your work before moving on to the next. With this approach, when you get to the end of the course, you’ve done the hard work. You don’t go back to the beginning and try to remember everything you learned from day one.
VIDEO-BASED: This course is video-based so you can watch it anywhere, anytime that works for you - as long as you have an internet connection. You can re-watch the videos as many times you wish for a whole year. There's also downloadable resources available. And, if you have questions, just reach out in the "Discussions" area and I will personally answer your question.
SPECIFIC RECOMMENDATIONS: In this course, I make specific recommendations on equipment and I show you how to use it. You won’t be overwhelmed with too many options and choices that you have to spend time researching. I also teach you how to use audio editing software - from installation to editing!
SAVE MONEY: Oh and then there’s this…this course is WAY and I mean WAY less expensive than many other courses. Who am I to stand in the way of your dream?
Module 1: Choosing and Preparing a Place to Record
This will be easy and pretty inexpensive. Find a place in your home to record and learn how to make it "soft" to diffuse sound and reduce echo.
Most items will already be in your home, but you'll also receive a complete list of items and tips that will be helpful.
Module 2: Recording Equipment
You'll probably be surprised how inexpensive this can be. And, you won't need to waste hours researching microphones or equipment. I've already done that for you. In this module you'll learn all about microphones and receive a list of recommended microphones and other equipment. You'll know where to get it and an approximate cost.
Then, we'll cover the recording software. Best of all, it's free! You'll learn how to use it in this module.
Module 3: Skills
We'll cover how to use your microphone and practice mic skills. We'll cover voice skills including warming up and protecting your voice. And, we'll cover reading and script interpretation skills.
Module 4: Where to Find Work
We wouldn't teach you how to do voice overs and then not show you where to find work! In this module we cover all the places you can find work including auditioning and producing your own voice samples and demos.
Module 5: Running Your Business
Learn how to organize your business here. We discuss business entities, record keeping, your company name and logo, websites, talent agents and how you get paid.
Module 6: Doing the work
In this module, we make sure you know what to expect on a daily basis and how to prioritize your efforts each day. We'll also discuss rates.
Module 7: Free Voice Review!
Once you've completed the course, I offer you a free voice review! You'll receive scripts to record. Once you record them and send them to me, I will give you feedback on your delivery, script reading and interpretation skills and also give you descriptors of your voice. It's like a free coaching session!

I only get to give up to 5 stars? Triple that and I would give this course the full 15 stars! Julie Eickhof is a master at voice overs and is a highly gifted teacher. Julie's course is comprehensive. She not only tells you everything you need to know about getting started doing voice overs, she shows you in her easy-to-follow demonstrations, often more than once. There's no fluff in this course, only useful, practical information, tips, and advice, including how to take care of your voice and warm up before recording.. Julie not only explains how to make a quality sound booth, she critiques yours by looking at pictures of it that you send to her and listening to samples of your work. You learn more than enough about each pillar of this business to advance with confidence in your own voice over career path. Julie also goes the extra mile by answering your questions via email, usually within 24-hours. And Julie's Voice Review -her assessment of the quality of your voice over sample- is invaluable. Her suggestions here are all geared toward helping you put your best voice forward. I was about to pay for a course that cost 5 times as much as this one, and I'm sure it would have been good, but I was fortunate enough to find Julie's course before I signed up for the other. I not only saved a ton of money, I know that I got the biggest bang for my buck! Julie is awesome! Her course is excellent! And I am super-satisfied!Read Less

Thank you-Thank you, for your Voice Over course, Julie! The text was easy for a newbie like me to understand. I would highly recommend this to anyone interested in doing Voice Over work. You saved me a ton of time by getting right to the heart of things. Teaching me those vital first steps, regarding the booth, equipment, and practice, got me up and running! Your simple and clear course material saved me 100s of hours in trying to figure it out on my own. Shortly after completing your course I got my first VO project!! You were with me every step of the way. My rough edges were being smoothed out. My only regret is that I didn't find you sooner. I'm looking forward to a future in VO. Julie is such a great teacher. I've heard her on TV, so learning from a successful Voice Over Artist with "celebrity" status made this even more fun. I've learned so much already, just doing a quick run-through on this course. My next step is to go back through and really dig-in and apply everything I've learned so that I can start auditioning. I really feel like this course is going to give me the confidence and industry knowledge to get started and hit the ground running. I can't wait to send my demo scripts to Julie and receive her professional feedback - that feature alone is worth the price of admission.Read Less

Julie is an excellent teacher and so encouraging when it comes to beginning a new career. I've been an M.D. since 1988 and have been told often that I have a great reading voice. I've been using Audible.com since 2012 and am very picky about what books I will listen to based on the narrator. A bad narrator makes me exchange a book almost immediately. So, I know how important good narration or VO is for the listener to any voice talent. Thank you, Julie, for such a comprehensive course. I recently retired from practicing medicine and can't wait to launch into this new adventure and career in voice acting/narration.Read Less

This is a fantastic way to get your footing in the world of voice overs. Julie is thorough and precise with her lessons. The course is VERY actionable and that is the type of education that sticks with you. She gives more than enough resources and updates the course regularly to keep it fresh and relevant. The voice review was so encouraging and honest. You can tell she wants you to succeed, yet she never panders to you by telling you what you want to hear, only what you need to hear. This is invaluable when stepping into this field. She helps you to narrow your focus and highlight your strengths with far less trial and error you'd to go through in the field. I don't have any negatives! I love that you can pay monthly if you're running on a budget which is always nice. If you think you'd like voice overs, then go for it and take this course. If you find out you don't like VO then you still learned something! Maybe you'll find the editing interesting. I know I did and I'm even considering looking into deepening my editing and master skills. A very useful skill in this day and age!Read Less

I found this course to be invaluable. I really appreciated all of the very specific information in how to set up a recording space and the type of equipment I'd need. It saved me a TON of research, and the result is excellent. I don't live in the quietest neighborhood and was wondering if I'd be able to get around that, but using your information seems to have done the trick. The Audacity software has been easy to use (I did have to get help from my nephew to install the plug-ins on my iMac), and your instructions about mastering and editing allowed me to get good-sounding recordings from the start, at least as far as I can tell. I'll know for sure once the evaluation is returned! I really appreciate the website information, especially the pronunciation and where to find work sites. You even give discuss pay rates and the business end of working as a voiceover artist. It's an A-Z course about how to start working in the business, and I'm SO glad I found it. It's well worth every cent in time saved and mistakes avoided.Read Less

I am an actress with over 30 years spent in the business of acting for stage and film. I decided to get into voiceover work because it is the one industry that allows your talent to be more important than your looks. When I started researching voiceover work and how to get started, I was bombarded with information that led me to believe that I couldn't get into the business without spending $1000's of dollars... and that was even with all of my acting experience. However, something in my gut said that there was another way. The great news is this program explains that you can not only get started without spending $1000's of dollars, but it also explains how spending that much is not a smart investment. This program shows you how you can do it with just a little investment. It walks you through the step-by-step process and gets you into a place that will help you feel confident about getting a voiceover business started from your home. I appreciated all of the information I received from this program and I suggest that anyone who is interested in this business, should make the small investment to get a BIG return!!! - JN - NCRead Less

I found this course to be a well-structured introduction to voice over work in a home recording studio. I came to the course with a lot of questions about the software and studio set-up side of things, and was able to learn a lot about editing voice recordings through the lessons on audiobook production. I am starting a completely new and want to start with a great foundation. Julies course gave me the perfect starting point. She explored everything that I think I need to be really successful. She's not teaching a quick course on how to make six figures in six months kind of thing. She's honest about the work needed (and to practice) and most of all be a professional. And then she tells you exactly where you need to go to be successful. She teaches you step by step. Also, the customer service was great when I needed them. thanks Julie!Read Less

I very much appreciated the actionable steps and advice given in this course. This is a fantastic course. It explained beginning to end really well. It was very easy to follow and vary informative. Loved the added interviews with Sweetwater and Emily Laurence. I have been thinking about audiobook voice over work for about 2 years. I rarely watch TV and spend most my time reading. I got into audiobooks about 5 years ago through my Library. I started using them for walking or working out. But they gradually became my first choice. Going through this course has cemented my goal to become a Voice Over Artist. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you Julie!!!!! Please put me on the list for any other courses to come in the future.Read Less
Hi, I'm Julie. I've been working from home doing voice overs since 2011. In that time, I've narrated and produced well over 100 audiobooks and am an Audible Approved Producer. I love the creativity and flexibility!
My background includes a long list of varied careers...including broadcasting, teaching and real estate. A few years ago, I added Online Course Creator to the list.
And that was for you. Many of my acquaintences had been asking how they, too, could be come a voice artist. So, I sorted through all the important information I learned throughout the years and then worked to make it the least confusing, most easily followed and thorough as possible. And here we are! I hope I can help you follow your dreams as well.
I love hearing from my students. In fact, nothing makes my day better than the email titled "I got hired!" Knowing that I'm helping other people realize their dream, is the best feeling ever.
I'm happy that our paths have crossed!
Do I really need to purchase my own recording equipment?
Yes, you will need to purchase recording equipment. You cannot do professional recordings on your phone.
I live in a small apartment/trailer/mobile home, can I set up a recording space there? Or can I travel doing this career?
You will need space that is generally quiet for long periods of time. And you will need to be able to treat the space to control echo. Ask yourself if you can do that in the space you are thinking about using as your recording space.
A closet can work as a recording space. A walk-in closet with a little more space works better. And clothes hanging in a closet can help absorb echo.
An important aspect of professional recording is consistency. You want your recording space, microphone settings and sound to all sound consistent from one recording session to another. If you think you can achieve that while traveling, then you may be able to. But it may be difficult.
How long until I can start earning money?
When you begin a voice over career, you are learning new skills and starting your own business. Your success depends on you. How well you follow the instructional videos matters, how much you practice your new skills matters, how much you audition and market yourself matters. You have autonomy and flexibility in this career, but it also means that you have be committed to the work. Many students have booked work within just a few months of enrolling in the course.
What other expenses can I expect other than the cost of the course?
At this point, I am assuming that you already have a computer that you intend to use for recording. So, a computer is not included in this estimate. Then, there are 3 areas where you likely will have other expenses.
First, in getting your recording space ready to use. Most people have many of the things they need (like thick blankets) available to them, but you may choose to purchase some extra things. Budgeting $100 or so would be helpful.
Secondly, the recording equipment itself – Budgeting around $300-$350 if you have really good headphones already, or add $100 if you need headphones.
And the third area to budget for is to join an online casting site for auditioning. You don’t have to do this, but I encourage joining for a year. This can range from $200-$500. There are places you can audition for free, but for a year I do recommend joining an online site so that you have access to many auditioning opportunities.
Are refunds available?
Refunds are not available because you have access to all the information at the time you enroll in the course.
How do I know if I have the right voice for a voice over career?
For starters, there is no “right voice.” All kinds of voices are needed in the voice over world. But, in general, you do need to have a voice that is easily understood – you need to enunciate your words well and you need to be comfortable making a script come to life. Do you like giving presentations? Reading stories to your kids? Singing? Acting? These are all good attributes for a voice artist.
What are the computer requirements for the audio editing software taught in the course?
A CPU that supports SSE2 is required (any CPU made after 2003 should support this).
Windows10 (32 or 64 bit): Recommended RAM/Processor Speed: 4GB/2GHz. Minimum RAM/Processor Speed: 2GB/1GHz.
Audacity works best on computers meeting more than the minimum requirements. For lengthy multi-track projects, we recommend using machines of substantially higher specification than the minimums.
Older versions of Windows/old hardware: A compatibility table that includes old versions of Windows may be found on the Audacity wiki.
Audacity 2.4.1 is believed to work correctly on Windows 7, 8.1 and Vista, though please note that 7, 8 and Vista are obsolete and no longer supported by Microsoft.
2.1.3 (no longer supported) was the final version to run on Windows XP (which itself is no longer supported by Microsoft).
Audacity is for Intel Macs running macOS 10.15 Catalina, 10.14 Mojave and 10.13 High Sierra.
Audacity runs best with at least 2 GB RAM and a 2 GHz processor.
For lengthy multi-track projects, we recommend a minimum of 4 GB RAM and 4 GHz processor.
How long does the course take to get through?
The run-time of the videos in the course is around 3.5 hours. However, there are also text materials in the course that will require time to go through. The course is set up so that you watch a few videos first (for example, the first videos on setting up your recording space) and then you stop watching the videos and go set up your recording space. Then you come back to the course and watch the videos about recording equipment. Then you stop watching the videos and go obtain your equipment. And so forth. So, you don’t need to sit and watch the entire course from start to finish. You will be stopping to do the work before proceeding. And you can re-watch the videos as many times as you need, for up to a year.
I live in another country; will this course still help me? Or, I speak another language, will this course help me?
While the vast majority of the material covered in the course could be helpful no matter where you live, I am not an expert in auditioning, marketing or finding voice over work in other countries other than the United States.
Virtually all kinds of languages and accents are needed for voice over. This course covers English-based students, so if you intend to do voice over work in another language, you may need to secure coaching elsewhere.
The audiobook publisher I teach in the course is ACX, which at the moment works with narrators from the U.S., Canada, Ireland and the UK. You may be able to find other audiobook publishers for your own country on your own.
